Guide's Notes

Choosing Between a Hotel and an Apartment in Phuket 🌴

14 November 2025

Hello and welcome to the island. Let me share a few thoughts on what to expect from your stay—and where on the island—when comparing two options: a traditional hotel and an apartment (or condo‑style stay). The goal is to help you choose comfortably and realistically, without illusions.

Hotel: what You get—and what to expect 🏨

Pros:

  • Everything is organized for you: front desk, cleaning, breakfast, sometimes a restaurant, pool, concierge. Fewer chores overall.
  • Frictionless: arrive — check in — relax. Ideal for short stays when you want to “switch off and not think.”
  • Predictable standards: fresh towels, daily housekeeping, refreshed rooms.

Expectation check:

  • Less space: a hotel room is often much smaller than an apartment with a kitchen and living room. If you plan to cook or work remotely, space can feel tight.
  • Tourist‑centric locations: restaurants in walking distance are convenient, but you’ll often be surrounded by the same tourist chains—not always “local” color.
  • You may pay more for a comparable standard than you would without the “hotel package.” In short: you pay for convenience.
  • More surface‑level contact with the island: you can end up inside a “hotel bubble.”

If your priority is minimal hassle, a short visit, and an “all‑included” feel, a hotel fits. It switches on “vacation mode” more easily than “immersion mode.”

Apartments: Independence, space, and depth 🏠

What apartments offer:

  • More freedom: a kitchen, living room, often a washer—so you can cook, live like at home, work, and not rely on restaurants. At Holy Cow Phuket we have such options, and we recommend this format for longer stays.
  • Better value for longer stays: for example, our overviews show studios from around ~US$700/month in Phuket. HolyCow+1 (link to the long‑term rentals page)
  • A stronger “sense of place”: living outside a hotel complex, you’ll visit the supermarket, local cafes, and markets—tuning into the island’s rhythm.
  • Closer contact with locals: you pop into the same 7‑Eleven, chat with a neighbor, witness a real Thai morning ritual, and hear more than just tourist voices. It’s island life, not a resort bubble.
  • If you’re a blogger/vlogger, a curious traveler, or simply want to live “like a local” for part of your trip—apartments give you the space and the script for that.

What to keep in mind:

  • A bit more self‑reliance: you’ll handle meals, laundry at times, and maybe transport. – Location matters more: if the apartment is in a residential area, the beach/cafes might be a bit farther. – Service differences: cleaning and linen changes can be less frequent or “on request,” not daily like in hotels.
  • Practicalities: you’re in the realm of longer stays—lease details, utilities, internet—these matter more. We have a guide to long‑term rentals on our website.

Examples 📍

These examples show you don’t need “hotel = high budget or resort style.” An apartment can be premium and extremely convenient.

Why living among locals reveals the island better 🌿

When you’re not in a hotel but in an apartment:

  • You step into the local shop, see what Thai people buy in the morning, and what neighbors chat about. Morning becomes a real-life scene, not just a hotel “breakfast.”
  • You explore the neighborhood: cafes, budget eateries, markets—not just a concierge desk. You feel the island is “for living,” not only for tourists.
  • You notice the day’s rhythm: early mornings, easygoing streets, a local scooter passing by, someone getting a Thai massage on the roadside. It’s a different energy than a hotel complex with an endless pool, restaurant, and crowds of visitors.
  • For vloggers/travelers, it opens up storytelling: not only beach and cocktails, but markets, sunsets, a solitary swim, hidden lanes.
  • If you’re staying longer, apartments create a “settled” feeling: not just “arrive‑relax,” but “live on the island.” It shapes your perception, mood, and creativity.

What to check in advance — my recommendations ✅

  • Test the internet and workspace: if you work remotely, make sure connectivity is stable.
  • Clarify what’s included: electricity, water, washer, internet, cleaning. Document the apartment’s condition.
  • Confirm the location: proximity to a supermarket, transport, cafes. If you want to explore the island, pick a less “airport‑touristy” area and something more local.
  • Make a list of expectations: if you need daily housekeeping, a full spa, a kids club—a hotel may be the better choice. If you want freedom, space, and “island life,” go apartment.
  • Consider length of stay: the longer you stay, the more advantages apartments have (and the less sense it makes to pay for “all included”), especially on an island with strong rental services.
  • Balance view vs. logistics: a great view can mean higher floors, a trickier access road, or a longer walk to the beach.

In Summary✍️

  • For short getaways, a hotel gives you a complete package with minimal hassle—fast and convenient.
  • For deeper stays, work, or exploring the island, apartments give you freedom, space, and genuine contact with Phuket and its people.

At Holy Cow Phuket, we aim to offer you quality apartments—not just a “room.” If you’re leaning toward exploration and everyday island life, and plan to stay 2–3 weeks or even a month or two—you’ll find options on our site that deliver both comfort and a true “island” feel.

With respect,

Sergei Shaliapin – Founder Holy Cow Phuket
