Nai Yang has its own character — quieter than Bang Tao, more alive than Mai Khao, and refreshingly free of the resort machine that dominates the west-coast strip. It is a small community with a beachside life that runs at its own pace: fishermen’s restaurants at the waterline, kites in the sky from May, a coral reef close enough to snorkel to without any organisation.

Mornings begin at the beach, seven minutes from the front gate. Nai Yang is calm enough to swim year-round — the reef acts as a natural breakwater — and clear enough in the dry season to see the coral from the surface. Put on a mask, wade out a hundred metres, and you are among parrot fish, clown fish, and occasionally a sea turtle that has wandered in from the national park. There are no boats to book or guides to arrange. Just the sea and what lives in it. From May onwards, the kite-surfers arrive and the beach takes on a different energy: bright canopies above the horizon, the hiss of lines, the thud of landing — it is a genuinely good spectacle even if you never touch a kite yourself.

With a scooter or car — which opens the north considerably — the range stretches in all directions. Mai Khao’s extraordinary empty beach is ten minutes north. Bangtao and the Laguna complex, with its beach clubs, golf, and Boat Avenue restaurants, is twenty minutes south. Black Ginger at The Slate is a short evening drive and one of the finest meals on the island. The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a morning excursion that tends to become a full day once you are there. And the Sarasin Bridge at dusk, with mangrove lagoons turning gold on both sides, costs nothing and stays with you.

The insider tip: the local fishing restaurants at Nai Yang — the ones without menus in English, with plastic chairs and a chalkboard of the day’s catch — are among the best-value meals on the island. Look for a table directly at the waterline. Grilled prawns, a cold Singha, and the last light of the day on the Andaman.
